Instructor
General Responsibilities: Instructors teach skills, crafts and lead activities for the students during the program. They are directly responsible for the well being and actions of the students while under their care in the activity block. The instructors are important as they are often in the best position to help monitor the health, learning and other important issues that the students are going through. Instructors maintain the ongoing role-modeling that is so crucial to the development of student's abilities during their stay at Coyote Trails.
Specific Duties: To teach skills and crafts, lead activities and implement the general program. To ensure that all students and staff follow all safety guidelines as set forth in the Health and Safety Manual. To point out any behavior or activity that might need the attention of the Director or Assistant Director of either the students or staff. To follow all trip or day hike rules. To care for all tools and craft supplies responsibly and to make sure they are put away correctly and are not wasted or mistreated. To lead the volunteers in making sure that the chores are done correctly and safely. To communicate effectively with the staff during meetings and informally about issues such as programs, scheduling, appropriate activities, weather concerns and other concerns for health, safety, morale and/or effective program facilitation. To take part in an activities schedule such as siesta and evening activities.
Qualifications: Previous experience working with children in a wilderness skills program or other relevant experience. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to maintain a positive role model atmosphere. Ability to supervise younger volunteers. Basic knowledge of wilderness skills and crafts and have a good foundation of a "caretaker" ethic in terms of teaching ecological principles and philosophy. Must also be at least 18 years of age. Current Wilderness First Responder or equivalent a must.
